Makes Scents

Swap your summer fragrance for one that’s crisp and spicy for all

Here’s a recipe for an all-natural fall scent you can mix up right in your kitchen. “Spices like orange peel and cinnamon are known to warm the body,” says Jane Hendler of Ajne Parfumerie and Apothecary in Carmel, California, who created this recipe. “Just make sure to use fresh spices; powdered ones can become muddy.”…

You'll need:

  • 1 quart water
  • 2 teaspoons grated fresh orange peel
  • 2 teaspoons sliced or grated fresh ginger or dried granules
  • 2 teaspoons cardamom pods
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 2 teaspoons grated or whole nutmeg
  • Glass spray bottle

Directions: Put water in an uncovered pot along with your choice of spices. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low. When the water has evaporated down to about 1 cup (after about an hour), strain the herbs and pour into a glass spray bottle. Then spritz away.
